Everything I was looking for in classic Chinese takeout. The chicken is the best quality I've ever seen in a Chinese food restaurant and the service was great! We tried the almond chicken, sesame chicken, general tso's, and chicken chow mein. All white meat chicken, tastes fresh and flavorful. I didn't find the medium to be too spicy so we'll probably go up a level next time. The egg rolls were tasty and even the broccoli that came with the meals tasted fresh and not limp. I'm not a huge fan of their fried rice, but it wasn't bad. This is a tiny hole in the wall place, but looked clean enough. Definitely worth a try!

Fantastic almond chicken! Well worth the stop. The egg rolls, pork fried rice, won ton the best. Lot of food great price!

I ate at Ping's for the first time the other day. I realized that they were about to close so I called and she took my order anyway without hesitation. The woman that greeted me was very pleasant. I ordered the almond chicken dinner and egg drop soup. The soup was the best I've ever had and the chicken was cooked perfectly. The egg rolls were pretty standard and the rice was really good. I only give them four stars because the sodium levels were out of control, keep plenty of water handy. I will be back and I recommend Ping's.

Pings is the best Chinese food ever! I moved to Arizona, born and raised in MI... every time I come home for a visit I MUST go to Pings and get Chinese food! No one can compare to Pings!! Love them!!!

Just ordered Ping's for the first time tonight. We ordered sesame chicken and chicken lo mein (dinner combo - comes w/ rice and egg roll). It was really just so-so. My sesame chicken was all white meat and crispy - but left a gross after-taste in my mouth. The chicken portion was huge, the egg roll was big, but not a lot of rice. The chicken lo mein was another story. There wasn't really a lot of flavor at all and there was BARELY any chicken in it. Overall, the place was clean and the staff was friendly. I can say I tried Ping's - didn't like it and probably won't go back to give it another try. 2 stars for the cleanliness, friendliness, portion (some) for value/price and fast service. That's where it ends. No stars for the food itself.

Mr. Julie and I are feeling cold-y so I ordered 2 quarts of wonton and 4 egg rolls to pick up on the way home from work. Person on phone: a little short. Person when I picked up: couldn't have been nicer. We ate ALL the soup and ALL the egg rolls that night. Oopsie, thought that would last 2 days but it was toooo good! Ate the egg rolls in 2 sittings and they were even great microwaved. Super happy we tried this place!

Best Chinese in Rochester area. I have been going there for years. Food is always hot and done fast. They are great if you need to take different things out. Ex. I'm allergic to mushrooms.

Spoke to someone on the phone ordering pick up. They were very rude like I was doing them a favor. You're not the only Chinese restaurant in town. Customer service is key.

Great food! I had the general chow and it was probably the best I've ever had. We also had the Kung pow..I would rate that a 3, it was mostly all veggies..and the chicken fried rice, well I thought it had great flavor, my only complaint was the chicken..it was the texture of tofu and in little square shapes - I'm not sure if I got tofu on accident or it was a weird chicken meat (almost like cooked deli chunks), but otherwise the rice tasted good. I would go again just for the general chow!! Very cute family runs this place and they work very hard!

$14.48 bought a pint of hot and sour soup, egg drop soup, and an order of sesame chicken... and not just a little bit, but a lot. Chinese restaurants' portions are usually huge, but Pings is out of control -- a single order was plenty for two people to share, and it came with a pretty large egg roll and some fried rice. To me it seems like a lot of Chinese restaurants have sesame chicken that tastes kind of similar, but Pings' is pretty unique. Most sesame chicken I've had has had a more savory/soy sauce flavor, but Pings is more sweet -- I'm pretty sure they drizzle honey on it. We both (m'lady and I) liked it a lot. I was impressed the chicken was so crispy for so long in the take out box. The fried rice is fried rice ... it seems like any semi-competent Chinese restaurant cook can decent fried rice. The egg roll wasn't the best I've had, but it was still good. I blame some of that on the fact it got a little soggy in the box. The hot and sour soup was pretty eh. It wasn't spicy at all, and it wasn't all that sour. Not bad at all but... eh. Pings has a small area to sit in if you want to eat there, but you'll probably want to just get take out since there's not much to see. There aren't many good Chinese restaurants in the Rochester area (according to Yelp), but Pings is excellent. Huge portions (even for a Chinese restaurant), great sesame chicken, and above average egg rolls. I wasn't impressed with the hot and sour soup, but if I want Chinese and I'm around Rochester, I'd likely go to Pings.

I give this place a solid 3.5/5 the food is abundant and the quality is good (all white meat) but I think there are better Chinese places in the area (CHENGS!) This place is great to get your 3lbs of greasy Chinese food! It was good and relatively inexpensive. The workers were nice and the inside reminded me of Baskin-Robbins with the colors lol Would I come back again for takeout? Yes, while not my first choice it was still really good! Give em a try, the bf like the GT chicken and loved the wonton soup :)

Very generous portions, decent prices. I had General Tso's for lunch and it was all white meat chicken without too much sauce. I believe the lunch size was priced below $6. Well worth it considering this is what you would pay for a lousy sub down the street. I have also had cashew shrimp on another occasion which is probably the best I've ever had.

This is probably the best Chinese food I have ever had. Sometimes, it's a little bit inconsistent, but that will happen with different cooks. It has the best almond boneless chicken I have ever had. The egg drop soup is very good. They are very friendly and nice here. They are quite helpful when you have a question about something that pertains to the food. I would suggest this restaurant to anyone I know.

Pings is great when you are looking for greasy Chinese! I love their egg rolls, egg drop soup, wontons, dumplings, and their almond chicken combo. My husband and I eat here 1-2 times a month. Over the past 2 years they've only messed up my order once. Not bad. Definitely our go-to Chinese place in the area!

GREAT Chinese food (for the area.) Weird backstory: I am obsessed with shrimp fried rice. It is one of my favorite foods. I moved to Michigan from southern California in 2008 and I have been shocked and disappointed by the quality of the Chinese food here for 8 years, at least compared to California. (To clarify: I am totally open to the idea that that CA Chinese food has been affected by other regional flavors and isn't authentic; I'm not looking for 'authentic' Chinese, I'm looking for Chinese food that tastes like it does in CA.) I have tried tons of places, only to find the rice dry and flavorless in comparison to my beloved CA fried rice. I even tried researching different areas of Chinese cuisine - maybe the Chinese food in MI is typically another style/region of food than California? I couldn't find any answers. I would order giant buckets of Chinese food every time I went home to California, because I haven't been able to satisfy that craving here in MI. Finally at Ping's, I got something really really close! I would say it's 80% the same as the rice I love from California. It's the right texture, the right flavor, has the right ingredients. I will say I was disappointed that the shrimp were small and not fried in egg; in CA they are larger shrimp completely covered in egg. So I think it will just be Egg Fried Rice for me, but still, I am so much closer to my favorite food. I live in Royal Oak and I will be making the 30 minute drive up to Rochester as often as possible! :D Also, the people were incredibly nice, and our food was ready in like 5 minutes. And the portions were HUGE. My husband's combination special left 3 plates of leftovers when I dished it out at home! They also have CANS of soda! (I hate bottles. Also, pop, because I live in Michigan now. This is the weirdest Yelp review I have ever written, please forgive me.) YAY PING'S

I have very mixed feelings towards Pings, but surprisingly they will probably get my business again. At least once more. As for customer service. I called them at 8:30pm when they close at 8:45. Asked them if it was OK to order still, and their response was, "Yeah, but you come on time, no late!" For a moment there, I thought it was my mother on the other end. Questions like, "do you think a quart of soup is enough for 2-3 people?" was met with answers like, "I don't know how much you eat!" Lol. With no racism intended, I would venture as far as saying that many East Asian food service workers have a reputation for being short, even venturing into what Americans consider rude. However, in their defense, it is rarely any indicator of the food quality. I chalk it up to their cultural norm. We picked up the food: A quart each of: 1. Chicken fried rice - Good. Not too greasy, and plenty of cubed chicken. 2. General Tso's chicken - Great. Not too greasy. Not corn syrupy and over sweet like at some cheapo places. Plenty of chicken, and just a few broccoli pieces. Just how we like. The chicken was light and almost spongy in texture though, not dense and stringy white meat. In other words, the cross sections of the chicken pieces resemble white meat nuggets, more so than white meat boneless wings/strips. Hope I made that clear. That may not be for everyone. 3. Egg drop soup - The soup was creamy, hearty - excellent. Ranks amongst the best egg drop soups I've ever had. And the crispy crackers that came with the soup were so tasty. Yum! Like a snack on their own. 3. Mongolian Beef - Now here comes the tragic part. The culprit behind the star reduction. The Mongolian Beef had VERY LITTLE beef. I mean it was as if it was a vegetable medley and beef was considered a vegetable to them. I would say it was about a 30/70 meat to veggies ratio. Poorly done. Paid a beefy price for mostly veggies. Me no likey that value. A quart of white rice was included as well. Hopefully at no extra charge. So overall, I feel this place makes quality food, but just some entrees (in our case Mongolian Beef) will underperform to flagrant foul levels. As a Yelper, I take meat-quantity related fouls very seriously. We will order from them again, but be wise in choices. I want to venture to other chicken dishes, but will need the bravery to ask them about the meat/veggies ratio. I did not like the hot chili oil cups are $0.25/each. There should be a quota for a few free ones per entree ordered. There is very simple space to eat inside, so of course carry-out is recommended. Surely, their egg drop soup will beckon to me again this winter. In the USA, land of the free and many shitty Chinese food spots, Pings still manages to stand out as a clean option. But - Where's the beef!?

Don't judge the book by the cover. From the outside it is an average small carry out restaurant. But when you taste the food you'll be very happy that you gave them opportunity. They give really good portions and the prices are very reasonable. The Sesame chicken and egg rolls are great. The restaurant is a must try

When I first saw this place I was skeptical because it is in a slightly "dumpy" location and the inside of the place is not particularly charming. However, the food is fantastic. I typically go for general tao's chicken and was not disappointed in it. The portions they give you is massive and really creates two meals. Their chicken friend rice is also pretty great.

  • Michael K.

Our favorite Chinese takeout place. They will tell you 20 minutes as opposed to the usual 10 minutes that you get, but that's because they make it fresh. In fact I usually have to wait a few minutes longer once I get there, but it's well worth it. The food is great and you get a lot of it. The containers are bulging with food, and you'll feel like your bag has a couple of bricks in it. Quantity definitely isn't an issue and it's nice that they also keep up on the quality of food, as it's always very full of flavor. I also have to compliment them on their shrimp dishes. Typically, shrimp dishes cost more and you're lucky to find more than a few shrimp in your container. While the shrimp options at Pings have the usual higher charge, the difference is that you get a lot of it, I'd say double or triple what you get in a normal quart of something at a Chinese place. You definitely feel as if you're getting your moneys worth. The inside of the place hasn't been touched in decades and they can be pretty short on the phone and when you pick up, but don't let any of that fool you for this is great food.

Sesame chicken is my go-to meal. 7 bucks out the door for my lunch combo. Can't argue with that.

  • Christine R.

Not bad. The owners are very frIendly and helpful on the phone, which I appreciated. The portions are huge and the prices quite reasonable. The only real issue that we had was the saltiness of the food. We will probably order from Ping's again, hopefully it was just a fluke because the other reviews are really good.

Great food for the area. Had shrimp fried rice, shrimp lo mein and general tso with wonton soup. Everything was really good.

  • Regina F.

So I won't sugar coat things, this place is in a strip mall, next to a bar and shares a parking lot with a CVS and the Salvation Army. But the face of this place is deceiving. The food is awesome with more than generous portions. The chicken Lo Mein is off the hook. Worth the drive from Ferndale (where I used to live). The only negative is the wait time for food. If you call at high time, the wait could be 45-60 minutes (even though they say the standard "15 minutes").

  • Dano R.

Top notch chinese food. Great egg rolls, fried rice and probably the best wonton soup you'll find anywhere. It's a family favorite. Try the dinner for two. It will feed 4 adults and then some.

I had to bump it up to 5 stars as I have yet to find a Chinese American restaurant that served good food on a consistent basis. Their General Tsao chicken and Sesame Chicken is always perfectly cooked with a delicious, almost candy-like coating that does not become overly soggy. The Wonton soup is so dreamy with pillowy dumplings in a perfectly savory broth with bok choy mixed in. I will never venture far again because each time, I am always disappointed with other places but never with Ping's!

YEP! Moving on up~ to 5 stars! Was down at Sams Club at 13 & John R , wondered what to grab & take home, stopped in Trizest & grabbed a menu for a future visit. But considered Chengs or Pings. Pings it was. The bride always orders either Gai Kow or Almond Chicken, as she looked at the Trizest Menu . .Low Mien Chicken was calling her name, as she never ever had it, but noodles sounded like comfort to her. I needed some Egg Foo Young 3 patties & fried rice [ not sure why , but today there was a $1.50 up charge for fried rice, but worth it none the less ] Placed the order & of course she said... 10 minute Arrived with 5-6 other people getting a Saturday Carryout at 5pm Order was ready & boy oh boy was it heavy...seriously a heavy load. Got it home , and the bride absolutely 'GASPED' at how good it looked & was. She had a hearty portion Saturday & then got two snacks out of it Sunday. My Beef Egg Foo Young was piping hot & so darn flavorful. I had a generous share on Saturday, lunch yesterday & now again as we speak.

I get a really itchy itch for fast greasy Chinese food every 4-6 months. This place scratched my itch last weekend! Of course best when eaten fresh. Their chicken fried rice was good with a generous amount of chunky chicken. Their general tso's was crispy with a nice red sweet and savory sauce, which was perfectly glazed on top; unlike some other places where the chicken gets soggy swimming in a pool of it. The Mongolian beef - subpar to say the least. There was about 30% beef and 70% carrots, bamboo shoots, celery, broccoli, bell pepper, pea pods, onion....now if I wanted a veggie dish I woulda ordered one, but I paid for beef dagnabbit!! Other than that conundrum, I was happy to see the huge portions. And yes their customer service has that New York City late night Chinese spot vibe of hurried and short remarks, I don't mind it, as long as they don't screw up my order! Probably will give this place another try in the future.

The portions and quality of this food are great! I tried it about 2-3 weeks ago and I loved it. I'll definitely be back again and again.

Diamond in the rough! The looks are deceiving. From the outside it looks pretty bad, sign not lit at night. The egg rolls are hand made, and they have the best fried rice in town! I would get carry out, don't eat in!

  • Patrick H.

Ping's is the hands down best Chinese food ever. Let's face it, when we crave Chinese food it is not BC we are looking to have a fine dining or gourmet experience. We want fast, hot, delicious and cheap. Pings delivers on all fronts. An example of why I love them is their sesame chicken. They use pineapple in their sauce, and the chicken's breading is crisp, not soggy like every other place. I have never been disappointed yet. I would caution that they go easy on the spice/heat levels so order accordingly. Medium is barely spicy at all.

  • Eddie B.

Worst Chinese food ever. Chicken was raw and slimy. The egg drop soup has a weird orange color to it. Even the easiest thing on the menu (fried rice) was dry and tasteless. If I could give zero stars I would.

    Decent carry out. Nice people.

  • Kera R.

I love this place. It's a hole in the wall in a tiny strip mall that isn't very fancy. Minimal seating and moderately priced. The food is tasty and what you would expect from a Chinese food place. The reason why I gave it 4 stars is because of the harr cow (spelling?). By far the best I have ever had! I love to pour the harr cow over the rice. Absolutely amazing! The reason why I didn't give it 5 is because there is a serious language barrier. I have a very hard time ordering from them. Other than that it's definitely worth a try!

Always happy with our take out from Ping's. It's easy to miss because of its location, but just look for the Salvation Army and CVS on the corner of Auburn and John R, and you won't miss this hole in the wall. Most everything on the menu is good and you will be pleased with the portion sizes. Our favorite is the Shrimp Egg Foo Yong. Have tried many and they serve the best one (lots of shrimp and the really good sauce). Combination Fried Rice is also good as well as their Mongolian Beef. Try their set menus for dinner - they have these available for two, four and six people. The choices include their most popular items. The family who owns Ping's are very nice and are helpful with the menu if you are not a regular. Another tip - better to always call your order in advance for pick up as the place gets pretty busy.

I've been searching for years for good Chinese and now the search is over. Ping's is the best this side of Mon JIN lau on 15 and Stephenson in Troy. Rock-On Pings, Great Food !!!

This place is the only carry out place in my neighborhood, so we frequent there often. This place is carry out, and while there's tables and chairs, the doorbell is super annoying and the lobby is drafty. The service is great and fast. And you get a ton of food from them!

Chinese food is my FAVORITE and after moving here in August, I tried several. Ping's is the best, by far. The food is excellent, the service is wonderful, and it's location is pretty good. It's take out, not dine in (although you could, I guess, although seating is limited and there isn't any atmosphere to speak of). This place is much cleaner and seems better run than some of the other take out places I've tried in the area. Plus, they give you HUGE amounts of food. I had leftovers for lunch for three days! Definitely worth a try, and this will probably be our regular place for Chinese take out from now on.

Finally a decent Chinese food place around me! I've tried a few places, and this is the best around the Rochester area. Menu is nothing different, just regular Chinese food items. We got orange chicken, general tso's, chicken black bean and sweet and sour. The four orders cost about $30. All were quite good. The portion is big, one order is enough for 2 people. Came with decent rice cooked in soy sauce, and big fried egg roll. Will definitely order here again.

This is a decent place to get Chinese take out. I was craving Wonton soup out of nowhere the other day, and I stopped here to order it since I know this place makes it consistently good. I usually get a small which will consist of three big dumplings. I then dump the entire pack of fried Wonton crisps into it to make it all the more satisfying. Of course the heartburn will set in later but for Wonton it's worth it. The take out menu offers Chinese, Cantonese and Hunan cuisine. The prices are average and you will get a lot of food if you order the full meals. The majority of their lunch specials are $5.65. Everything else ranges from $5.00 to $8.00. I moslty like ordering the soups, spring rolls and fried rice. I don't care too much for the beef and chicken dishes except for one and that is Orange Chicken. I like the way it's prepared with orange rinds...so tasty! Ping's is family owned and the service is speedy. The place closes around 9:30 p.m. but if I remember correctly they will take orders until 9:15 p.m.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
